I crave Grandma Ray’s homemade orange julius recipe almost every night!
Grandma’s house in Coquille, Oregon will always be one of my favorite places on earth. It is a tiny town in Coos County with less than 4,000 peeps. Going to stay at her house was more relaxing than any spa vacation I could ever dream up.
Grandma had a soft blue house at the end of a gravel road. You went down a steep drive until it flattened out. Her house on the left. A mini forest on the right that was completely overrun by wild blackberry bushes. She had cleaned up a lot of this mini forest, so that you could walk back into it until you hit a tiny stream. She even built a small wood bridge over the stream. Little Brother and I spent so much time running around this little, untouched piece of wilderness smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood. It was so green in the way that everything in Oregon seems to be–as if it just stopped raining five minutes before you got there.
Our time at Grandma’s was devoid of computers and tech and even movie theaters and restaurants and everything that reminds you of a bustling, fast-paced life. Instead it was cartoons recorded on VHS, puzzles and books, picking blueberries in her backyard, egg-in-the-hole for breakfast, and . . . ORANGE JULIUS. Every night (seriously, every night), we would be spread about her small living room, usually bent over a puzzle or reading, with tall icy glasses of orange julius.
Orange julius not only brings back those memories . . . when I’m sipping one, it brings back those emotions and feelings. Those stress-free, relaxed, at-home, feeling completely and utterly like the true you feelings that you sometimes think you’ve lost as an adult? Those come rushing back and I am me. At Grandma’s house. With orange julius. Appreciating and prioritizing family and slowness and life without . . . well, life.
I’m not saying everyone needs to pull a Thoreau. Just that I think it’s important to recognize and appreciate the happiness that can be found in those uncomplicated moments. With a glass of orange julius. 🙂 I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as our family does!
I would love to hear – where is your uncomplicated place, your place where you are you???
