i had to do the eep and now, I am going to crossfit again.
I pulled out my winter coat the other day and when I zipped it up, I had to do the “eep.” You know the eep? The little high-pitched eep that escapes your lips when, on the way to button your pants fresh out of the dryer or zip up your previous winter coat, you realize that you have to suck in the winter padding to get said zipper up??? Eep!
So I started going to crossfit again. We all remember the level 10 soreness going on the first time I started up crossfit? And while I have not become an uber-buff, crossfit-crazed, paleo-only masochist . . . (i really do enjoy crossfit), I very much appreciate the whole guten-free, unrefined food choices. They make my belly happy.
So expect to see some unrefined foodie recipes mixed in with the brownie batter cookie dough until the “eep” isn’t quite as audible . . .
Paleo BBQ Sauce
I couldn’t decide between a paleo honey bbq sauce and a paleo maple bbq sauce. Honey gives a more traditional BBQ flavor, but the maple syrup gives an almost smokey-like aroma. The longer you simmer this BBQ sauce, the thicker it will get. The coconut flour helps the thickening process along–it’s unnecessary if you don’t regularly buy it but your sauce will be slightly thinner.
The list of recipes you can use paleo BBQ sauce in is endless:
- pulled rotisserie chicken
- pulled pork
- ribs
- chicken nuggets
- french fries
- BBQ chicken pizza
- appetizers, e.g., rumaki
Cheers!

Ingredients
- 15 oz tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
- 2 teaspoons ground mustard
- 1/4 cup honey (vegan: maple syrup)
- 1 Tablespoon maple syrup (I use grade A dark)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 Tablespoon coconut flour
Instructions
- Add all ingredients except the coconut flour to a medium-sized saucepan. Heat over medium-high heat until simmering. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes. Whisk coconut flour into the mixture and simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
- Adjust for Taste: If you want it a bit sweeter, add an extra Tablespoon of honey. If you want it more spicy, add a 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne powder.
- Remove BBQ sauce from heat and allow it to cool. Store in a mason jar in the refrigerator. Use it with chicken or pork on burger buns. Or serve with roasted sweet potatoes, chicken nuggets, and/or french fries!
