Pickle ham roll ups!  A tasty, low calorie snack–perfect for when you’re looking for easy appetizers.

Pickle Ham Roll Ups!  These have been a staple at every family BBQ, game night, and super bowl party since I was a kid.  Amazing how three simple ingredients can create a must-have snack.

These are super easy appetizers and are perfect for serving a crowd — especially if you’re trying to balance out the chips and dip with some healthier bites! I use the 1/3 less fat cream cheese.  You can use the fat-free cream cheese, but it will be slightly harder to spread on the ham, since the cream cheese is slightly more watery.

Our family does epic BBQ / game nights–particularly as my cousins have started accumulating a crowd of only the most adorable munchkins in the entire world.  My favorite memories are of 20+ family members aged 2 – 70 mingling at my parents’ house.  Card games in the living room, toddlers playing on the jungle gym, parents chatting around the dining table, and the most IMPRESSIVE spread of pupus taking up the entirety of my parents’ kitchen counter.

And yes, you read that right.  PUPUS.  It’s a Hawaiian word for appetizers.  My parents were stationed in Hawaii when my Dad was in the Navy.  Since I can remember, Dad has always called it a “pupus and games night.” 🙂 🙂 🙂 And no pupus night is complete without pickle ham roll ups!

Ingredients

  • 1 package sliced deli ham (look for one that is sliced a bit thicker, so that it won't rip too easily, like the rectangular zip packs)
  • 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese
  • 1 jar dill pickle spears (*here are my go-to homemade pickles, which can be done with spears!)
  • toothpicks

Instructions

  1. Put a layer of 2-3 paper towels down. Place a slice of ham down on the paper towels and pat dry.
  2. Spread 2-3 Tablespoons of cream cheese across the ham slice.
  3. Pat dry a pickle spear with paper towels and lay the spear across the ham slice. Roll the pickle up in the ham slice.
  4. Use a sharp knife to slice the roll into 1 inch pieces and pierce each piece with a toothpick.
  5. Repeat for the remaining ham slices. Store in a tupperware in the refrigerator.

Notes

Feel free to substitute fat-free cream cheese, but it may be slightly more difficult to spread on the ham.

Hi! This post makes me sooo happy! This is one of my favorite snacks and whenever I mention it to anyone else- they 1) have never heard of it and 2) think it sounds unappetizing. But growing up in my family this dish was always on rotation when asked to bring an appetizer and I specifically remember it at every piano recital reception our family attended. My mom and (now me) always used whole dill pickles so that when you cut them- they make pretty circles on the serving platter. The only other thing I would add is that I always soften my cream cheese to room temp before spreading on the ham- it makes life so much easier. And they always taste better after chilled in the fridge to several hours or overnight to let the flavors mingle.

Thanks for your tips! And I totally understand! These are not exactly the most glamorous appetizer, but they were a STAPLE snack at every family gathering and everyone loves them! I like the idea of using whole pickles, since I'm a pickle fan...

Ha. One of my favourite sandwiches is leftover ham, old cheddar and kosher dill. This is like that sandwich on a stick. Perfect. Do you have a recommendation on a particular brand of pickle?

Thanks for stopping in, Romain! I am a major pickle enthusiast, so I am a fan of all the pickles, no matter the brand! I am, of course, partial to my own dill pickles however...

Ham and cream cheese - great combination I've tried! Ham,cream cheese and pickle - now that I haven't had before, but I love pickles and I'm pinning this one to try! Wish I had some pickles right now....
